As we are a step closer to the Peer Review Week 2025 (PRW 2025), taking place from September 15–19, 2025, it’s high time to pause, reflect, and invite the global scholarly community to join the timely and transformative dialogue. This year’s theme “Rethinking Peer Review in the AI Era” deeply resonates across disciplines, echoing both the promise and the ethical complexities of integrating technology into the bedrock of research assessment.
Why “Rethinking Peer Review in the AI Era” Matters
The theme’s selection followed a rigorous, community-centered marked by a global vote that drew 894 responses from researchers, editors, publishers, and advocates worldwide.
Why has this theme ignited such widespread interest? It’s simple: AI is reshaping almost every domain out there, and scholarly workflows is no exception! While these tools promise efficiency from manuscript triage, reviewer suggestions, and automated quality checks to alleviate review workloads, they raise questions around bias, transparency, accountability, accessibility, and the erosion of critical human judgment.
As these critical concerns are already being debated across editorial boards, institutional policies, and research workflows, PRW 2025 offers a global, inclusive platform to explore them in depth.
Envisioning a More Ethical, Responsible Future
Picture peer review in 2030: An ecosystem where technology empowers, rather than overshadows, human values, and journals are guided by ethical frameworks, transparency, AI literacy, and accountability. However, reaching there required a collective effort of the policy-makers, publishers, and ethicists in crafting future-ready policies that promote the responsible adoption of AI in the review ecosystem.
Transparency and Disclosure:
Authors, editors, and reviewers should clearly disclose AI’s role in their work—whether in drafting, evaluating, or decisions. Transparency fosters trust.
AI Literacy and Training:
Reviewers and editors must be equipped to interpret AI-generated content, critique outputs, and detect algorithmic blind spots. This demands targeted training and resources.
Bias Mitigation and Fairness:
AI must be audited to ensure it doesn’t amplify systemic biases. Journals should adopt tools and protocols to measure and correct skewed outcomes.
Human-Centered Hybrid Models:
While AI can triage submissions or identify reviewers, critical scholarly judgment must remain human. Models should enhance, not replace, the nuanced perspective and contextual understanding only people can provide.
Regulatory Guardrails:
Clear guidelines around AI ethics in peer review, akin to those in clinical trials or data privacy, must become standard.
Foresight and Preparedness:
Journals should anticipate future shifts like AI-driven hypothesis generation or data-driven review; and design policies that are adaptable, robust, and grounded in integrity.
