This volume is dedicated to a very special person, Professor Gad Hetsroni (1934–2015). His towering figure was familiar to researchers in heat transfer and multiphase flow all over the world. He was the founding Editor of the International Journal of Multiphase Flow and the person who defined and promoted the discipline around the journal. The unique community formed in this field during his lifetime gathers every three years for a major conference, the International Conference on Multiphase Flow, that most recent was held in May 2016 in Florence, Italy. This was the first time ever Gad did not attend ICMF. Friends and colleagues from many countries came to Florence to present their personal tributes and scientific papers honoring Gad. Reviewed and edited tributes and scientific papers dedicated to Gad from these memorial sessions comprise the core content of this memorial volume; certain persons who could not participate in the ICMF made later contributions.
George Yadigaroglu was Professor of Nuclear Engineering at ETH-Zurich (1982–2004, presently emeritus) and is President and founder of ASCOMP AG, an ETH spin-off company specializing in applied scientific computing. From 1988 to 1999 he also headed the Thermal-Hydraulics Laboratory at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), the national research laboratory in Switzerland. He was previously, from 1970 to 1982, Assistant, Associate and finally Professor of Nuclear Engineering at the Univ. of California-Berkeley, and served as Head of the Nuclear Regulatory Service in Greece during the period 1979–1982.

He studied mechanical Engineering at the Ecole Polytechnique Fedérale of Lausanne (EPFL) Switzerland and obtained his doctorate in Nuclear Engineering from MIT.

His areas of technical specialization are thermal-hydraulics applied to nuclear reactor safety and more generally thermodynamics / heat transfer / fluid mechanics and most recently the application of computational fluid mechanics methods to multiphase flows. He has also worked on risk assessment and siting of nuclear power plants, risks and environmental impact of energy production, utilization and energy resources, etc.

He has been active in research and consulting for various organisations and national laboratories and has been a member of several high-level national and international committees dealing with nuclear safety issues. For over thirty years he organized and directed with G Hetsroni the series of Zurich Courses on Multiphase Flow. Most recently, he was member of the Scientific Council of the Institut de Radioprotection et Sûreté Nucléaire, or IRSN. ANS and ASME Fellow. Former Assoc. Editor of the Int. J. of Multiphase Flow.
