Workshop Briefs

Topic 1: Introduction to Academic Publishing—Writing, Submission, and Successful Publication

It is important to assess the validity, significance, and originality of the described work by experts from respective fields, but it is equally imperative that the writing quality of the articles submitted to journals is excellent to avoid rejection at the peer review stage. Unfortunately, many papers do not even reach as far as the review process and fall prey to desk-rejection by the journal editors itself due to non-compliance to internationally accepted language requirements. This presentation is primarily targeted toward researchers who wish to submit their papers to top-notch international journals but face difficulty with the correct usage of language and grammar.

After this session, you will have more information about the following:

  • Awareness of the academic publishing process
  • Structure of a standard academic paper (IMRAD format)
  • Importance of literature review and structuring of reference lists
  • Preparing your paper for publication and journal selection
  • Discussion about the manuscript submission process
  • Overview of the peer review process

Topic 2: Challenges in Academic Writing: The Role of English Language

For authors and graduate students whose primary language is not English, the most challenging aspect is conveying their research in a manner acceptable for publication in peer-reviewed international journals. It is also challenging to include all the findings from a research study in one article and present it in an efficient and appealing way. Currently, many studies written by ESL authors are rejected by the journal editors themselves and do not even reach the stage of peer review. This presentation will provide researchers important and easy tips for correct usage of English language and grammar and presentation of data while writing their manuscripts.

After this session, you will have a better understanding of the following:

  • Understanding the importance of good English writing skills
  • Improved knowledge about the application of English grammar in academic writing
  • Importance of fluency, clarity, and readability of the manuscript
  • Awareness of common mistakes made by ESL researchers while writing in English
  • How to present research data effectively
  • Importance of manuscript proof-reading to avoid mistakes before submission
