Refinement, correction, editing or formatting the manuscript to improve clarity of language

Human Review Mandatory

Policy Summary

Taylor & Francis permits authors to use generative AI for language improvement, provided it is used responsibly in ways that uphold data security, confidentiality, and copyright protection. Authors must review generative AI outputs to confirm content accuracy and ensure all sources are correctly attributed, and authors remain accountable for the originality, validity, and integrity of their submissions. Authors must clearly acknowledge any use of generative AI tools within the article or book, including the full tool name (with version), how it was used, and why it was used; for article submissions, this statement must appear in the Methods or Acknowledgments section. Use of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies should be undertaken with human oversight and transparency.

Evidence

  • Taylor & Francis supports the responsible use of Generative AI tools that respect high standards of data security, confidentiality, and copyright protection in cases such as: * Language improvement This includes reviewing the outputs of any Generative AI tools and confirming content accuracy, and that all sources are correctly attributed. Authors are accountable for the originality, validity, and integrity of the content of their submissions. Authors must clearly acknowledge within the article or book any use of Generative AI tools through a statement which includes: the full name of the tool used (with version number), how it was used, and the reason for use. For article submissions, this statement must be included in the Methods or Acknowledgments section. Utilising Generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in any part of the research process should always be undertaken with human oversight and transparency.

Authors are responsible for ensuring their submission meets required standards and that it is created by the author. Authors must review any generative AI outputs and confirm their accuracy, and must clearly acknowledge any use of generative AI tools in the article including the tool name, version, how and why it was used.

Evidence

  • Authors are responsible for ensuring that the content of their submissions meets the required standards of rigorous scientific and scholarly assessment, research and validation, and it is created by the author. This includes reviewing the outputs of any Generative AI tools and confirming content accuracy. Authors must clearly acknowledge within the article or book any use of Generative AI tools through a statement which includes: the full name of the tool used (with version number), how it was used, and the reason for use. Authors should not submit manuscripts where Generative AI tools have been used in ways that replace core researcher and author responsibilities, for example: text or code generation without rigorous revision.

Translation of manuscript text for the purpose of publishing

Human Review Mandatory

Policy Summary

Taylor & Francis permits authors to use generative AI for language-focused assistance, including editing and polishing article language, which encompasses translation use within the writing process. If an author has used generative AI in any way when writing the article (including for language editing or translation), the author must include a statement in the Acknowledgements identifying the AI tool used and its purpose. This disclosure will then be reviewed by the journal editor, and after that review the statement may be included in the published article.

Evidence

  • Authors can use generative AI for a variety of tasks including editing and polishing the language of their articles. If you have used generative AI in any way when writing your article, you must include a statement in your Acknowledgements section to say which AI you used and for what purpose. For example, “The authors used [NAME OF AI] to [STATE PURPOSE]”. This will then be reviewed by the journal editor. Following this review the statement may then be included in the published article.

Refining or formatting of data reported in the manuscript

Policy Summary

Authors should not submit manuscripts in which generative AI tools have been used to replace core researcher and author responsibilities, including using synthetic data to substitute missing data without a robust methodology. The publisher does not permit the use of generative AI to create original research data for use in its publications. The policy does not specify human review requirements for this classification.

Evidence

  • Authors should not submit manuscripts where Generative AI tools have been used in ways that replace core researcher and author responsibilities, for example: * synthetic data generation to substitute missing data without robust methodology Taylor & Francis currently does not permit the use of Generative AI in the creation and manipulation of images and figures, or original research data for use in our publications.

Generation, refinement, correction, editing or formatting of images, diagrams or other figures for illustrative purposes only

Human Review Mandatory

Policy Summary

Taylor & Francis does not permit the use of generative AI to create or manipulate images and figures related to outputs of scientific and clinical research. However, the publisher explicitly permits AI tools to assist with conceptual illustrations of processes, flow diagrams, or teaching illustrations when disclosed. Authors must retain all versions of images and prompt records, include a declaration at submission, and include a figure legend statement identifying the AI tool used.

Evidence

  • Taylor & Francis currently does not permit the use of Generative AI in the creation and manipulation of images and figures, or original research data for use in our publications. Use of Generative AI tools for creating or changing images related to the outputs of scientific and clinical research is strictly prohibited. Use of AI tools to assist conceptual illustrations of processes, flow diagrams or teaching illustrations are permitted. Authors must retain all versions of the images and records of the prompts used, which must be shared upon request. A statement declaring the image has been generated by an AI tool, and the name and version number of AI tool used, must be included in the figure legend for such images.

Generation, refinement, correction, editing or formatting of visualisations of research data or results

Human Review Mandatory

Policy Summary

The publisher permits the use of AI tools to assist with visualisations of research data (excluding video and audio content). Authors must keep all versions of the images and the prompt records used, and must share these upon request. Authors must also include a submission declaration covering specified confirmations (including originality and accuracy confirmation, tool name and version, terms-of-use suitability, publication rights/permissions, and author responsibility for integrity), and must include a figure-legend statement that the image was generated by an AI tool with the tool name and version number. The policy does not specify human review requirements for this classification.

Evidence

  • **Visualisations of research data (excluding video and audio content)** Use of AI tools to assist research data visualisations is permitted. Authors must retain all versions of the images and records of the prompts used, which must be shared upon request. A declaration must be included within the submission stating: Originality and accuracy of content has been confirmed by the author. The name and version number of the AI tool used. Confirmation the authors have checked terms of use for the specific AI tool used, and therefore confirm suitability for publication. Confirmation the authors have the right to publish the images generated, and have obtained any permissions where required. Confirmation the authors take full responsibility for the integrity of the whole content, including accuracy of references. A statement declaring the image has been generated by an AI tool, and the name and version number of AI tool used, must be included in the figure legend for such images.

The Responsible Use of AI Initiative

Enago has been working with authors from Japan, China, South Korea, the Middle East, and South America, to edit and polish their manuscripts, supporting them in getting their voices heard and their research out.

The advent of GenAI brought incredible new opportunities, but with a nice side of confusing policies, unclear guardrails, and a lot of responsibility on researchers.

Our own frustration, coupled with what we were hearing from our customers, led to this initiative. We think there should be zero compromise on research integrity, and this is our way of supporting the research publishing ecosystem and its stakeholders.

We love feedback. So if you have something to tell us, please send us a message.
