An Initiative to Help Researchers

Use AI Responsibly

Make informed, ethical choices when using Generative AI
as you write your scholarly manuscript.

What questions should you be asking while writing your paper?

01Can I use Gen AI while writing my manuscript?

02Where and how can I use AI in my manuscript?

03What are my responsibilities as an author?

04Am I complying with publishers guidelines around AI use?

05What kind of human review does my manuscript need?

What are you responsible for as an author?

01Human
review!

Before submitting your paper,  a human needs to review it, even if you used GenAI minimally. This person must be a subject matter expert + a language expert who can check that GenAI hasn’t changed the meaning or essence of your content.

02Documenting &
disclosure

As you write your manuscript, it is a good idea to document where you are using GenAI, and for what. You could do this by saving your conversations with tools, so you are able to accurately declare the extent of your AI use.

03Security &
privacy

Remember that GenAI tools may use your data to train themselves. So anything you upload could be stored, saved, and savoured! Make sure you are using it safely, and only for content that isn’t confidential.

What publishers expect from authors

Publishers expect authors to use AI in responsible ways, declare how and to what extent GenAI has been used, and ensure an actual person has reviewed all content before submission. To support authors in navigating these, we’ve built a mini library of tools that are free to use for researchers.

01Compliance with publisher policies

Publishers around the world have released policies around the use of AI. But they can be cumbersome to break down into actionable points.

With our free-to-use easy-view tool, find policies of the top 20 publishers in logical sections.

02Declaration & disclosure statements of AI use

Publishers require authors to submit a Disclosure Statement that details where, for what, and how much assistance has been sought from GenAI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini etc.

With this free-to-use form, you can declare everything that a publisher requires from you.

03Human oversight &
review

All of the world’s largest publishers require that manuscripts are reviewed by a human being before they are submitted to them for consideration.

In other words, researchers cannot submit content that has been generated by GenAI in any form, without a qualified human being reviewing it first - a peer, colleague, or a professional service - to ensure the meaning and essence of your paper remain intact.

You should seek support from someone who is a subject matter expert, and a language expert.

Workshops for researchers

For universities and research-led organisations, we host workshops that give researchers practical insights into using GenAI responsibly and ethically.

The Responsible Use of AI Initiative

Enago has been working with authors from Japan, China, South Korea, the Middle East, and South America, to edit and polish their manuscripts, supporting them in getting their voices heard and their research out.

The advent of GenAI brought incredible new opportunities, but with a nice side of confusing policies, unclear guardrails, and a lot of responsibility on researchers.

Our own frustration, coupled with what we were hearing from our customers, led to this initiative. We think there should be zero compromise on research integrity, and this is our way of supporting the research publishing ecosystem and its stakeholders.

We love feedback. So if you have something to tell us, please send us a message.
