Refinement, correction, editing or formatting the manuscript to improve clarity of language

Human Review Mandatory

Policy Summary

IEEE requires that any AI-generated content used in a submitted article be disclosed in the acknowledgments, including identification of the AI system used, the specific sections containing AI-generated content, and a brief description of the level of AI use. However, IEEE states that using AI for editing and grammar enhancement is generally outside the intent of this disclosure policy; in such cases, disclosure is recommended but not required. Authors should always double check any AI-generated results.

Evidence

  • The use of content generated by artificial intelligence (AI) in an article (including but not limited to text, figures, images, and code) shall be disclosed in the acknowledgments section of any article submitted to an IEEE publication. The use of AI systems for editing and grammar enhancement is common practice and, as such, is generally outside the intent of the above policy. In this case, disclosure as noted above is recommended. If using an AI system for editing and grammar, exclude the reference section; otherwise, the tool may make unwanted changes. Always double check AI-generated results.

Generation, refinement, correction, editing or formatting of visualisations of research data or results

Human Review Mandatory

Policy Summary

IEEE permits authors to use AI tools to create, refine, or edit photos, images, and other figures, provided the author can supply evidence of the original sources and explain how the final figures were generated. Authors must disclose any AI use for generating or editing figures in the acknowledgements section. IEEE prohibits using AI to generate or enhance video submissions. The policy does not specify human review requirements for this classification.

Evidence

  • The use of an AI tool to create, refine, or edit photos, images, or other figures is permitted, provided that the author can provide evidence of all original sources and how the final figures were generated. Furthermore, the use of AI tools to generate or edit figures must be disclosed in the acknowledgement section of the paper. IEEE prohibits the use of AI to generate or enhance video submissions. This is to ensure that authors have appropriate permissions for any video footage they submit and prevents copyright-related issues from arising. Authors are fully responsible for the originality, validity, and integrity of the content of their submissions, including any AI-generated text.

Assisting with gathering references

Human Review Mandatory

Policy Summary

IEEE does not provide a specific rule about using AI to assist with gathering references. However, IEEE's author-ethics guidance states that human authors are ultimately responsible and accountable for all content in their articles, including ensuring referenced material is properly and accurately cited. Articles must be reviewed and edited by the human authors.

Evidence

  • Authors are responsible for the compressed knowledge that is distilled into the language and text of their papers. This includes ensuring that all referenced material is properly cited, so that the contributions of others are properly credited. Articles must be reviewed and edited by the human authors, who are ultimately responsible and accountable for the content of their articles, including any AI-generated text.

09

Presentation of any kind of content generated by AI tools as though it were original research data/results from non-machine sources

Policy Summary

IEEE requires authors to disclose in their paper how any AI tool was used when AI is involved in the collection and analysis of data. Authors are ultimately responsible and accountable for all content in their articles. Presenting AI-generated data or results as though they came from non-machine sources, or otherwise misrepresenting data or results, is unethical under IEEE's prohibition on fabrication, falsification, and misrepresentation.

Evidence

  • Authors who use AI tools in the writing of a manuscript, production of images or graphical elements of the paper, or in the collection and analysis of data, must be transparent in disclosing in the paper how the AI tool was used. Authors are ultimately responsible and accountable for the content of their articles, including any AI-generated text. Fabrication, falsification, and misrepresentation of data or results are unethical.

The Responsible Use of AI Initiative

Enago has been working with authors from Japan, China, South Korea, the Middle East, and South America, to edit and polish their manuscripts, supporting them in getting their voices heard and their research out.

The advent of GenAI brought incredible new opportunities, but with a nice side of confusing policies, unclear guardrails, and a lot of responsibility on researchers.

Our own frustration, coupled with what we were hearing from our customers, led to this initiative. We think there should be zero compromise on research integrity, and this is our way of supporting the research publishing ecosystem and its stakeholders.

We love feedback. So if you have something to tell us, please send us a message.
