Policy Summary

ACS requires authors to disclose the use of AI tools for text generation within the manuscript's Acknowledgments section, describing when and how the tools were used. Authors are responsible for all submitted content, including the accuracy of any AI-generated material. Editors may determine that AI use is too extensive, including AI-generated substantive commentary or extensive literature reviews, which may result in rejection or a request to revise.

Evidence

  • The use of AI tools for text or image generation should be disclosed in the manuscript within the Acknowledgments section with a description of when and how the tools were used. Authors are responsible for all submitted content including the accuracy of AI-generated content as well as referencing associated material as appropriate. The editor may, at their discretion, determine that the AI use in a given submission is too extensive, including (but not limited to) AI tools used to generate substantive commentary or extensive literature reviews.

Translation of manuscript text for the purpose of publishing

Human Review Mandatory

Policy Summary

Authors may use generative AI and AI-assisted technologies only to improve the language and readability of their manuscript text. Authors must review and edit any AI-assisted text as needed and remain fully responsible for the accuracy of the resulting content. Authors must disclose any use of these technologies in the manuscript’s “Acknowledgments” section, including the tool/service name, the date used, the version, and the reason for use.

Evidence

  • Yes, generative AI and AI-assisted technologies may be used to assist in the writing of a manuscript. However, there are some restrictions. 1. You may only use these technologies to improve the language and readability of your work. You are responsible for the accuracy of the content created with the AI. 2. You must disclose the use of generative AI or AI-assisted technologies in your manuscript. You can do this by adding a statement at the end of your manuscript in a new 'Acknowledgments' section or in an existing'Acknowledgments' section. The statement should include the name of the tool, version, and the date it was used. For example:'During the preparation of this work the author(s) used [NAME OF TOOL / SERVICE] on [DATE] version [VERSION] for [REASON]. After using this tool/service, the author(s) reviewed and edited the content as needed and take(s) full responsibility for the content of the publication.'

Policy Summary

ACS holds authors accountable for everything submitted, including the accuracy of any AI-generated content, and requires that all AI tool use be disclosed in the submission. The policy also states that using AI to create or alter images, figures, or data is not permitted. The policy does not specify human review requirements for this classification.

Evidence

  • Authors are responsible for all submitted content including the accuracy of AI-generated content as well as referencing associated material as appropriate. All use of AI tools should be disclosed within the submission. The use of AI to create or alter images, figures, or data is not permitted.

Generation, refinement, correction, editing or formatting of images, diagrams or other figures for illustrative purposes only

Human Review Mandatory

Policy Summary

ACS requires authors to disclose any use of AI tools for image generation in the manuscript Acknowledgment section, describing when and how the tools were used; for more substantial uses, authors should provide full details in the Methods or another appropriate section. For graphics, authors should include a brief description of AI use in the figure caption so readers understand how the image was created. ACS permits AI-generated cover artwork when the AI use is disclosed in the cover art caption, the specific tool(s) are named, and a brief description of how they were used is provided; authors are responsible for ensuring tool terms permit commercial use and that the output is not owned by the generating website, and any AI use must comply with ACS Artificial Intelligence Best Practices. The policy does not specify human review requirements for this classification.

Evidence

  • The use of AI tools for text or image generation should be disclosed in the manuscript within the Acknowledgment section with a description of when and how the tools were used. For more substantial use cases or descriptions of AI tool use, authors should provide full details within the Methods or other appropriate section of the manuscript. For graphics, a brief description of AI use should be included in the figure caption to explain to readers how the image was created. Journal cover art: The use of AI tools for image generation in cover artwork is permitted but should be disclosed in the cover art caption submitted alongside the artwork file. Please name the specific tool(s) used and include a brief description of how the tools were used. Authors are responsible for ensuring that the terms of use for all tool(s) permit commercial use and that the output is not owned by the generating website. Any use of AI tools must comply with ACS Artificial Intelligence Best Practices and be disclosed in the cover caption.

The Responsible Use of AI Initiative

Enago has been working with authors from Japan, China, South Korea, the Middle East, and South America, to edit and polish their manuscripts, supporting them in getting their voices heard and their research out.

The advent of GenAI brought incredible new opportunities, but with a nice side of confusing policies, unclear guardrails, and a lot of responsibility on researchers.

Our own frustration, coupled with what we were hearing from our customers, led to this initiative. We think there should be zero compromise on research integrity, and this is our way of supporting the research publishing ecosystem and its stakeholders.

We love feedback. So if you have something to tell us, please send us a message.
