The data was collected from institutions and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elsevier.com\/solutions\/scopus\">Scopus<\/a>\u00a0to assess the institution\u2019s reputation. Five ranking \u201cpillars\u201d were created corresponding to the \u201ccore\u201d missions of each institution:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Teaching<\/li>\n<li>Research<\/li>\n<li>Citations<\/li>\n<li>Industry income<\/li>\n<li>International outcome<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, following\u00a0key statistical information was provided by the institutions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Number of full-time equivalent (FTE) students.<\/li>\n<li>Ratio of FTE students to number of staff.<\/li>\n<li>Percentage of international students.<\/li>\n<li>Ratio of female to male students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Ranking Latin America Universities<\/h1>\n<p>For 2017 rankings, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/world-university-rankings\/2017\/latin-america-university-rankings#survey-answer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">81 institutions from eight countries were analyzed<\/a>. Institutions from both Argentina and Ecuador were reviewed for the first time. Brazil\u2019s institutions occupied five of the top 10 rankings.<\/p>\n<p>The following institutions were ranked as the top 10 for 2017:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>State University of Campinas, Brazil: Strong scores in research citations and industry income.<\/li>\n<li>University of S\u00e3o Paulo, Brazil: Considered one of Brazil\u2019s most prestigious and largest universities.<\/li>\n<li>Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, Chile: Outstanding performance in mathematics, physics, economics, and management.<\/li>\n<li>University of Chile, Chile: Home of the National Astronomy Observatory.<\/li>\n<li>University of the Andes, Colombia: One of South America\u2019s leading institutions.<\/li>\n<li>Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education, Mexico: \\Provides high school programs in engineering, management, social, arts and human sciences, and medicine.<\/li>\n<li>Federal University of S\u00e3o Paulo, Brazil: Has programs specifically to teach students to become health professionals and contributes to medical research.<\/li>\n<li>Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: One of the largest in Brazil.<\/li>\n<li>Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), Brazil: Focuses on scientific and innovative research.<\/li>\n<li>National Autonomous University of Mexico, Mexico: Houses the Centre for Applied Sciences and Technological Development.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Research in Latin American suffers from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enago.com\/academy\/growing-crisis-brain-drain-crisis-in-latin-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">low salaries, lack of funding<\/a>, and too much government oversight. Fortunately, things are changing and some universities have moved up in the ranks because of it.
