{"id":7780,"date":"2017-05-31T22:00:39","date_gmt":"2017-05-31T16:30:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.enago.com\/academy\/?p=7780"},"modified":"2019-07-19T16:48:50","modified_gmt":"2019-07-19T10:48:50","slug":"idioms-improve-or-detract-from-academic-writing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.enago.com\/academy\/idioms-improve-or-detract-from-academic-writing\/","title":{"rendered":"Do Idioms Improve or Detract from Academic Writing?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When you think of popular English idioms\u2014<em>hit the nail on the head, kick the bucket, the last straw, see eye to eye, <\/em>and so on\u2014and examine the possible usage, you will find that there are a number of idioms that are used in both formal and informal usage. If you are not certain of what <em>idiom<\/em> means, here is the definition: <em>\u201c<\/em>An\u00a0idiom\u00a0is a commonly used word or phrase with a culturally understood meaning that is different from what its constituent words\u2019 translation would indicate.\u201d It is also called a <em>figure of speech, expression, proverb, <\/em>or<em> saying.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As confusing as an <a href=\"https:\/\/englishlive.ef.com\/blog\/15-common-english-idioms-and-phrases\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">idiomatic phrase<\/a> might be, even a change as small as a preposition can make a difference: \u201cPrepositional idioms often give non-native speakers of English nightmares, and even native speakers of English need to double-check them at times\u201d (CMS 5.190). You could be <em>smitten with <\/em>love (deeply attracted) for a person but would not want to be <em>smitten by<\/em> the person. Idioms add color and imagery to the writing, but they could be seen as too informal. So, how should they be used in academic writing? Before you begin writing an article, ask yourself this question: How important is it to make your writing sound like a native English speaker and\/or less formal? The following points will help you to decide:<\/p>\n<h2>Pros<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Using idioms shows familiarity with English. It demonstrates that you are comfortable with both formal language and informal colloquialisms.<\/li>\n<li>When you want to make your writing sound more conversational (informal vs. formal), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.idiomsite.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">including idioms<\/a> can give your writing a more relaxed tone. For example, this sentence presents formal sentence structure and terms: \u201cA thorough review of the underpinning concepts was made, but the principles exceeded my grasp\u201d), whereas this one sounds more informal: \u201cI read the lesson word for word, but it\u2019s all Greek to me.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Because idioms add imagery, using them can make your writing more memorable. A sentence such as \u201cShe said it was time for him to have a taste of his own medicine\u201d could be easier to remember because the reader can relate to the act of taking medicine or to the displeasure of a bad smell or taste.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"om-dqx4acd1ednpm2dtmovz-holder\"><\/div>\n<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.opmnstr.com\/app\/js\/api.min.js\" data-campaign=\"dqx4acd1ednpm2dtmovz\" data-user=\"41855\" async><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>Cons<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Readers unfamiliar with a certain phrase might take it literally. For example, a man was so angry that he was \u201cfoaming at the mouth.\u201d Because an illness like rabies could actually cause this to happen, a reader might wonder whether the phrase was meant metaphorically.<\/li>\n<li>Idioms vary by country, region, and period\u2014an English term may be specific to America, England, or Australia or specific to World War II. A sentence such as \u201cHis talk was all <a href=\"https:\/\/scottandrewross.com\/2013\/08\/26\/early-20th-century-american-slang\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">flumadiddle<\/a>\u201d would be understood by readers in the 1920s to mean \u201cnonsense,\u201d but the term would probably be misunderstood today.<\/li>\n<li>Using idiomatic phrases could be distracting for readers who expect a formal tone. Scholars in scientific fields are likely to be accustomed to more formal writing, and phrases such as \u201cthe icing on the cake\u201d or \u201ca New York minute\u201d might be seen as out of place in academic writing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Do Idioms Fit the Subject and Audience?<\/h2>\n<p>Consider whether the topic is one that calls for a less formal tone and more vibrant imagery. Are your readers likely to be well versed in English idioms and slang? Once you know what your target audience prefers, you will be able to decide whether the use of idioms is appropriate. Using an idiom is much like using a slang of a particular field. It is like using the regional dialect of Hebrew or the urban slang of New York City. Phrases such as \u201cshe wore her heart on her sleeve\u201d and \u201che had an ax to grind\u201d can either delight or trouble your readers. Research the type of writing that is common for your subject, and you will make a wise decision about using idioms.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"display:flex; gap:10px;justify-content:\"
