Here are some major highlights from the publishing industry:<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Surge_in_COVID-related_Research\"><\/span>1. Surge in COVID-related Research<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Research outputs worldwide increased due to <a href=\"https:\/\/search.bvsalud.org\/global-literature-on-novel-coronavirus-2019-ncov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">research efforts devoted to the coronavirus<\/a>. With an aim to create a platform with comprehensive information about the pandemic and avoid spreading misinformation, WHO continues to gather latest international multilingual scientific findings and knowledge on COVID-19. It cites the global literature in the WHO COVID-19 database and updates it daily (Monday through Friday). This data is collated and uploaded from searches of bibliographic databases, hand searching, and the addition of other expert-referred scientific articles.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Sharp_Rise_in_Preprints\"><\/span>2. Sharp Rise in Preprints<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The global pandemic also fueled a surge in dissemination of <a href=\"https:\/\/reports.dimensions.ai\/covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">COVID-19 research<\/a> published through preprints due to the time-sensitiveness of the research studies. The scientific community rapidly released over 125,000 COVID-19\u2013related scientific articles, of which more than 30,000 were <a href=\"https:\/\/connect.medrxiv.org\/relate\/content\/181\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">published on preprint servers<\/a> such as bioRxiv and medRxiv.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Rapid_Review\"><\/span>3. Rapid Review<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Due to the topicality of COVID-19 related research, journals rushed to get articles through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enago.com\/publication-support-services\/peer-review-process\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"115\" title=\"Peer Review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">peer review<\/a> at an accelerated rate. MedRxiv COVID-19 preprints appeared in peer-reviewed journals after a median review time of 72 days, twice as fast as preprints from the server on other topics. However, this pace was observed only for COVID-related papers at the expense of other research being peer-reviewed at a much slower rate. Consequently, other research papers faced the burn of a significantly slower publication rate.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Journals_Eliminate_Misleading_Information\"><\/span>4. Journals Eliminate Misleading Information<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Beyond the surge in publications, the pandemic ushered in some unexpected improvements. Publishers and editors of scientific journals streamlined the process, making it more reliable by identifying and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-020-01452-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">eliminating misleading information<\/a> and poorly conducted research.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_STM_Report_on_Global_Research_Trends_and_Transformation_in_Open_Access_Publishing\"><\/span>5. STM Report on Global Research Trends and Transformation in Open Access Publishing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>STM (the Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers) published the latest edition of \u201cThe STM Report\u201d. This report is a comprehensive overview of the scientific and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enago.com\/academy\/2021-stm-report-global-research-trends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scholarly publishing market<\/a>. It reveals significant publisher-driven growth in Open Access (OA) and explores the variances across different markets of the global economy.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_The_Open_Access_Drive\"><\/span>6. The Open Access Drive<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>More than 20 organizations, including Wellcome Trust in London, the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation in Seattle, Washington, and Dutch national funder NWO, started stipulating that scholarly papers published from the work they fund must be immediately free to read. The 2-year-old initiative, called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enago.com\/academy\/plan-s-a-revolution-in-open-access-publishing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Plan S<\/a>, brought a revolution in Open Access publishing. Clarivate\u2019s Journal Citation Indicator (JCI) Identifies the World\u2019s Leading Journals<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>While Clarivate has been publishing its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enago.com\/academy\/journal-citation-reports-2021-identify-worlds-leading-journals-with-clarivates-journal-citation-indicator-jci\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Journal Citation Report<\/a> for over 50 years now, this year they went a step ahead by launching a new and more reliable metric system called the Journal Citation Indicator (JCI)\u2014an alternative single journal-level metric that can be easily interpreted and compared across disciplines. The participation of over 4000+ researchers from across the globe, validated our effort and elated us. Overall, the event was commingled with facts, insights, opinions, collegiality, and an aspiration of a progressive future.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><strong>International Open Access Week 2021: Enago Shares Light on Building Structural Equity with Open Knowledge<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Supporting the Open Access drive, Enago also participated in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enago.com\/academy\/international-open-access-week-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Open Access Week 2021<\/a> and shared insights on the theme\u2014It Matters How We Open Knowledge: Building Structural Equity. The organization aims to take action around this year\u2019s theme whenever is most suitable during the year and to adapt the theme and activities to their local context.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_See_the_Future_Conference\"><\/span>3. See the Future Conference<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In its second year, Enago\u2019s See the Future <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enago.com\/see-the-future\/conference-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">virtual conference<\/a> highlighted the future trends of research and publishing, and the aspects that will augment it. It\u00a0is a one-of-a-kind global conference, with yesteryear\u2019s Nobel Laureate Professor Randy Schekman\u00a0as the keynote speaker. The conference focused on vital aspects of research publication with its exclusively curated sessions by eminent researchers across the globe.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Launch_of_Two_Global_Surveys\"><\/span>4. Launch of Two Global Surveys<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><strong>Global Survey on Research Labs Health<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As a part of its Global Research Risk Assessment initiative, Enago conducted a survey to understand the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enago.com\/academy\/global-health-research-labs-survey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">impact of COVID-19 on research laboratories<\/a> across the world and how researchers are working in laboratories during the pandemic. Enago\u00a0 conducted the survey over a period of 16 weeks between October, 2020 and February, 2021. Over 1400+ researchers across 40 countries globally participated in the survey.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><strong>Global Survey on Role of AI-based Tools in Academia<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Given the influence of AI automation and tools on researchers, Enago conducted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enago.com\/academy\/survey-ai-tools-academic-publishing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">global AI survey<\/a> to comprehend and evaluate the role and impact of AI on the research and publishing field. With over 212 universities participating from around 52 countries, we awarded 10 participants who shared <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enago.com\/academy\/enago-announces-the-winners-of-its-global-ai-survey-understanding-the-role-of-ai-automation-and-tools-in-academic-publishing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">insightful responses<\/a> to the survey.<\/p>\n<p>These are some of the major achievements for us this year!\u00a0 With your support, we aspire to bring to you a knowledge packed 2022!
