Defining plagiarism: when you present someone else\u2019s work as your own, you are committing an act of fraud. The website plagiarism.org<\/a> identifies ten most common types of plagiarism, and ranks them according to their severity:<\/p>\n

  3. FIND-REPLACE \u2013 key words and phrases are changed to disguise the use of someone else\u2019s material, but the essential content of the source material is retained.<\/li>\n
  4. REMIX \u2013 paraphrases from multiple sources are made to fit together.<\/li>\n
  5. RECYCLE \u2013 borrows generously from the writer\u2019s own previous work without citation (self-plagiarism).<\/li>\n
  6. HYBRID \u2013 combines perfectly cited sources with copied passages without citation.<\/li>\n
  7. MASHUP \u2013 Mixes copied material from multiple sources.<\/li>\n
  8. 404 ERROR \u2013 includes citations to non-existent or inaccurate information about sources.<\/li>\n
  9. AGGREGATOR \u2013 includes proper citation to sources but the paper contains almost no original work.<\/li>\n
  10. RE-TWEET \u2013 includes proper citation but relies too heavily on the text\u2019s original wording and\/or structure.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The consequences of such acts can vary from a simple correction, a public retraction and correction (if your work is published), or more serious legal consequences depending on the plagiarism policies of your academic institution.     Determination of Intent<\/h2>\n

    The challenge of defining plagiarism lies not in recognizing that the work has been presented without appropriate citation, but in determining the extent to which that failure was deliberate or not.
