Although I thoroughly enjoyed my project and the laboratory environment, I knew academia was not for me. I could not picture myself supervising students and applying for grants, however, I enjoy doing research. For most PhD graduates who do dream about a life in academia, there are not enough academic posts for the increasing number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enago.com\/academy\/you-have-a-phd-what-next\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener dofollow\">PhDs graduating<\/a> each year. Whatever your reason, the question now is: what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enago.com\/academy\/non-academic-careers-for-academics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener dofollow\">career choices<\/a> do you have outside of academia?<\/p>\n<div id=\"om-dqx4acd1ednpm2dtmovz-holder\"><\/div>\n<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/a.opmnstr.com\/app\/js\/api.min.js\" data-campaign=\"dqx4acd1ednpm2dtmovz\" data-user=\"41855\" async><\/script>\t<\/p>\n<h2>Your PhD Skills are Transferable<\/h2>\n<p>Before you decide on a career, consider what you enjoyed doing during your PhD and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findaphd.com\/advice\/doing\/phd-non-academic-careers.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" class=\"broken_link\">the skills you acquired<\/a>. How can these skills be applied to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jobs.ac.uk\/media\/pdf\/careers\/resources\/10-career-paths-for-phds.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">jobs outside of academia<\/a>? Some examples of transferable skills include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Analyzed and interpreted complex data:<strong> data analysis <\/strong>skills<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Repeated experiments until they worked: <strong>problem-solving<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Presented your work at conferences: <strong>public speaking<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Wrote a thesis, published papers and\/or books or chapters of a book: <strong>writing <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Completed a PhD: the ability to <strong>complete an enormous project<\/strong> with minimal supervision.<\/li>\n<li>Planned a conference: <strong>event planning<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Worked with collaborators abroad: you can <strong>work with people from diverse backgrounds<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Career Options for STEM PhDs<\/h2>\n<p>Figuring out where to apply all your transferable skills can be a daunting task. Your options are never-ending. Here we list some <a href=\"https:\/\/cheekyscientist.com\/top-10-list-of-alternative-careers-for-phd-science-graduates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">common industry careers for STEM PhD graduates<\/a>, to give you some ideas:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Research and development (R&amp;D): <\/strong>This will make use of your methodical approach to research and can be applied to many industries including pharmaceuticals, banking, and fast moving consumer goods (FMCG).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Market Research Analyst:<\/strong> Research and evaluate commercial opportunities to maximize revenues.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Medical Communication Specialist: <\/strong>Healthcare organizations need people to write and edit materials for patients, clients, and medical professionals.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Business Development Manager: <\/strong>Your analytical skills and scientific knowledge can be used to develop new business opportunities and manage existing ones.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Management Consultant:<\/strong> Use your problem-solving skills to design strategies with a team. You have identified a problem, researched it, applied for funding, found a solution, and shared it with others about it in your thesis and\/or publications.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Finance: <\/strong>Equity research and quantitative analysis in the financial sector. If you have computer programming skills, this may be a route for you.<\/li>\n<li><strong>High School Teacher: <\/strong>Teach a subject related to your field of expertise. The school will love the fact that its teachers are highly qualified.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Writing: <\/strong>Write content or editorials for newspapers, magazines, or blogs.
