Denver, CO<\/strong>: Enago<\/a>, one of the foremost providers of English editing<\/a> and publication support services<\/a>, attended the 2016 Council of Science Editors (CSE) annual meeting in Denver, Colorado. This year\u2019s conference, held from May 14 to 17, had the theme \u201cThriving in the New Frontier\u201d and focused on current and emerging issues in the communication of scientific information.<\/p>\n

CSE\u2019s annual meeting serves as a key meeting ground for industry experts and professionals engaged in academic editing<\/a>, including high-level editorial staff and executives from numerous journals and societies. Enago was represented by Anupama Kapadia (Senior Manager, Editorial Operations) and Sheryl Vaz (Quality Analyst), who was one of three recipients of the CSE Scholarship.<\/p>\n

The prestigious CSE scholarship program, awarded since 2011, bestows complimentary registration and travel grants to editors and publishing professionals at various career stages to attend the conference and increase their knowledge of and expertise in the scientific editing<\/a> field. Sheryl was selected from 68 submissions, the quality of which was the highest ever according to event organizers. She now plans to share the knowledge she gained from the conference sessions to her colleagues and will also document them in a formal report.<\/p>\n

More than 480 were in attendance at the three-day event, which included ample training sessions covering issues relevant to academic editors, such as new editing styles and requirements. Pulitzer prize-winning science journalist, Deborah Blum, director of MIT\u2019s prestigious Knight Science Journalism Program and author of The Poisoner\u2019s Handbook<\/em>: Murder and the Birth of Forensic Medicine in Jazz Age New York, <\/em>kicked off the event with her keynote address that explored how today\u2019s journalists connect with the public on issues related to science.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a reason CSE\u2019s annual conference has become one the most popular events for scholarly publishing in North America,\u201d said Anupama. \u201cIt is a no-holds-barred forum where all minds actively discuss strategies towards the betterment of the academic publishing domain\u2014right from the keynote by Deborah Blum, which touched upon various aspects of how to intelligently and effectively communicate science to the average citizen, to sessions on industry-defining topics, such as \u2018Transition from Print to Online Publishing\u2019 and \u2018Scientific Misconduct: Investigating Alleged Misconduct and Educating to Prevent it.\u2019\u201d She continued, \u201cPersonally, it was also very fulfilling to meet editing stalwarts and technical geniuses from different areas of publishing. All in all, it is a great event with enterprising individuals at the helm who will ensure that the 2017 conference will be a notch higher!\u201d<\/p>\n
