Workshop Topic: How to Promote Published Research
Evolution in the scholarly communications landscape has led to authors proactively highlighting and promoting their work to a broader audience, in an attempt to improve the citations and impact of their research. These efforts typically complement the marketing activities undertaken by the publisher and author’s institution as part of an overall promotion strategy. However, it’s important to remember that authors themselves are often the most effective people to market their work—to provide context and tell the story behind their research.
As part of this presentation, we will first communicate the importance of promoting your research actively following its publication. We will briefly discuss how this responsibility is shared among the author, the research institution and the publisher. We will also provide tips on how authors can successfully use scholarly communication networks (SCNs) to market their research, in addition to other methods. Finally, we will go over a few Altmetrics platforms that allow authors to measure or test the effectiveness of their promotion strategy.
After this session, you will have more information about the following:
- Awareness regarding who’s responsibility it is to promote research
- Importance of marketing research
- Recommendations for authors to use SCNs
- Tips on different ways to promote research
- Awareness regarding Altmetrics and the platforms which provide them
