Levels of Editing
As an author and a writer, it is very important for you to know the different levels of editing available to choose the most appropriate one for your document. Irrespective of the subject domain and the purpose, an academic document has different requirements at different stages of its evolution. Below are the two levels of editing we offer:
Copyediting
In Copyediting, more attention is paid to language-related aspects, including grammar, style-related issues such as spelling and capitalization, punctuation and the overall correctness and consistency of the manuscript. Copyeditors ensure that the document meets academic standards with respect to grammar and style and that the writer’s thoughts come across clearly to the reader. This is an extremely crucial step before submission and/or publication .To know more in detail and to see the criteria for choosing this service, see Copyediting services.
Substantive Editing
In Substantive Editing, a manuscript is evaluated for its core content. Depending on the requirement, structural changes and large revisions may be made or suggested in order to attain smoother flowing text and clarity of meaning, while retaining the author’s intent and voice. Substantive editing includes all of what is done in Copyediting, plus content enhancements, structural changes (if deemed necessary) and improvement in consistency of information and ideas. Difference between Copyediting and Substantive Editing So what is the difference between Copyediting and Substantive Editing?
Copyediting involves correcting the language of the text, mainly pertaining to spelling, capitalization, punctuation, grammatical errors such as verb tenses and article usage, sentence structure, word choices and the like. However, if the content isn’t right, will Copyediting make much difference? No. This is where Substantive Editing comes in. Substantive Editing (also called developmental or content editing) involves checking the content in detail for factual errors, contradictions and inconsistencies.
